EXPRESS FREIGHT ACTIVITY : TNT

COSWIN ON THE TARMAC …

Freight management requirements are very demanding. The logistics issues involved regarding prompt delivery and the type of goods transported result in a need for a tight control of maintenance operations and make a CMMS system essential.

A unique site, a strategic maintenance

Express freight is a very specialised logistics activity, characterised by optimum delivery times, a door to door collection and delivery service, follow-up in real time of packages in transit, preferred use of air transport and mostly at night.

The Bierset hub does not have a warehousing infrastructure, nothing is stored there. When a consignment arrives, it is scanned, sorted then addressed to the recipient. “We mainly operate at night, that’s why the speed of intervention and equipment reliability are essential factors. In the event of a breakdown or holdups the whole process can be affected. We are the only European air hub; therefore we have a commitment to results. “, explains Alain Catanese. Night operations must be completed within less than six hours.

Joint indicators

Alain Catanese’s team relies on Coswin 7i and its integrated tools to analyze maintenance activity, costs, quality and estimates in order to improve planning, maintenance frequency, etc. With a fleet of several thousand units, the Liege team’s data is used for benchmarking within the group. As explained by Alain Catanese, Liege plays a cross-business role as strategic advisor to Management and in some cases even in support of other TNT sites at a European level. “The use of Coswin allows both the timely scheduling of equipment follow-up and diagnostics thanks to the indicators and dashboards available in Coswin. CMMS allows a meaningful analysis of work by all trades and professions, that we share with the other TNT sites “. Maintenance technicians have developed an internal CMMS ‘savoir-faire’. “CMMS allows us to react rapidly and on several levels, it’s a powerful tool to aid decisions. It’s not only used to optimise maintenance processes but also to run asset management “, adds Alain Catanese.

Rolling Stock

Deploying rolling stock, such as forklift trucks, pallet trucks and electric tractors, constitutes the essential activity of the hub. That’s why engine failures are analyzed objectively using breakdown statistics, etc. and are systematically tracked in Coswin. All data regarding maintenance of the rolling stock fleet have been saved in CMMS since the start of activities in 1998. TNT has for example established a chart or top 10 of the most frequent breakdowns and the corresponding maintenance operations. As a result TNT has access to a reference data base for better evaluation and maintenance planning. Detailed reports on equipment contained within Coswin also serve to project how costs evolve. For example, when equipment needs to be purchased, TNT uses the total property cost and manages its fleet accordingly.

Thanks to this expertise, the TNT Bierset site is able to establish a precise financial analysis and reporting of costs linked to activities.

About TNT

Throughout the world, TNT offers to both enterprises and private clients a large range of services in the field of mail (TNT Post) and express delivery of parcels and documents (TNT Express). The two main TNT Express infrastructures are based in Liege (Air Hub) and Arnhem in Netherlands (Road Hub). 78 000 employees work for TNT Express, the express worldwide mail division. Each week, 4.4 million consignments are dispatched to more than 200 countries.

The TNT Express Liege logistic platform deals with freight by air and freight by road. Each night, that’s an average of 40 planes and 120 trucks transporting parcels to the hub in order to divide them into groups, sort and finally send them throughout the European Union and the rest of the world. New airline routes to growing Asian destinations such as Singapore and China have been developed over these past few years. 1900 employees work at the Liege site, among them 800 work at night in the sorting centre and deal with about 550 000 parcels and 3 100 tons of freight each week. The Liege site comprises two complementary businesses: TNT Eurohub (the sorting centre) and TNT Airways (the air company).
